ONE CLUB - TWO TOWERS
August 10, 2018
** THREAT TO WHITECHURCH-WATERLOO COMMUNITY **
** NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING **
Cork County County has confirmed that it is “giving serious consideration” to closing the Waterloo junction on the N20 permanently.
This would mean that current members of Whitechurch & Rockbán GAA living in Newcastle, Garrycloyne and Waterloo would have to undertake a 30 kilometre round trip to attend the club via Blarney.
There is a similar impact on the community in Ballygibbon, when travelling to Waterloo church.
Residents in Waterloo & Ballygibbon are painfully aware of tragic accidents at the junction, and had been at the forefront in asking the Council to address the issue.
We wanted safety, not closure.
The effect of this decision will be the end of the strong community links between Whitechurch, Ballygibbon and Waterloo that have been built up for decades.
There may also be implications for the school, as it would no longer be the “closest” school to Waterloo. We cannot allow this to happen.
The Council says the closure will remain in place for as long as works continue, and that there will be a public consultation about the proposed closure.
Our community needs to find its voice.
If you want to take part in the campaign, please share this message.
Tell your local TD and councillor about the importance of the links between our community.
A public meeting has been organised for TUESDAY, AUGUST 14th at Whitechurch and Waterloo Community Centre at 8pm.
Please attend and show your support.
